Meet Our Team

  • Charlotte has had an extraordinary career and education, touring the world from the age of 12 to perform in opera houses and for some of the most powerful people on the planet. She studied her academic subjects on transatlantic flights and did GCSEs in the White House. But her most profound learning was found in conducting the business that she was so viscerally immersed in.

Her vision for the Awen Project came as a mother balking at the unnatural way schools organise children and systematically deny them basic freedoms. She embarked upon an extensive research and development project to understand how education was being done in the best schools in the country, from Springwell Learning Community in Barnsley, to Eton College. Ultimately it was Sands School in Devon that provided the greatest inspiration, and she founded the Awen Project as a charity to support democratic learning communities in 2019.

  • With a background in democratic schooling and teaching Modern Foreign Languages, Phoebe is one of our Educators accompanying the members of the Awen community in their learning and development.

  • Jonny is a composer, instrumentalist, performer, writer, storyteller and educator, working professionally in these fields for the last 20 years.

At the core of his practice as an artist and learning facilitator is bringing together meaningful and imaginative community, co-creation in all things, following consent-based democracy, and advocating for a group expectation of high achievements.

  • An experienced organisational consultant and qualified mathematics teacher, John is building strong foundations to help realise the vision of the Awen Project. He is passionate about democratic education, healthy organisations, and community engagement.

  • Nicola has been part of Awen since early in its development, and believes in our fundamental principles. With a background in child care and education, she has ample experience of seeing the current system in action. Also, being a mother of five children with very different personalities and skills she has seen first hand how different environments can hugely alter how a person learns.

Nicola firmly believe that given the freedom to find their passion, children will not only thrive academically, but will develop a greater sense of self.

Nicola’s family has a hugely diverse cultural background, and the opportunity for her children to be part of a community in which everyone has a voice and equal opportunity to participate, is of utmost importance to her.

”As an Awen trustee, I am passionate about exploring ways in which we can enable the students to develop into self confident young people with awareness of the opportunities that are available to them in the future.“
